Resolutions for the New Year

The new year is just around the corner, so it’s time to start setting goals and resolutions for 2022. While it’s common to focus on personal goals like being more active or getting a new job, we would also encourage you to make some resolutions for your home as well. Be More Water Wise

While drought might not be as common in Missouri as it is in states like California, Nevada, and Arizona, it doesn’t mean we should be careless with our water use. This year, make it a priority to reign in your water use. There are a few ways you can do this. When brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your face, do you leave the faucet running in the bathroom? It’s not necessary, so make it a habit to turn it off until you really need the water flowing again.

Does your shower take a long time to heat up? Instead of letting all of that cold water flow back out of your house, fill a bucket or two with the cold water and use it to water your plants or mop the kitchen.

Do you find yourself still handwashing dishes even though you have a dishwasher? While it might seem illogical, hand washing your dishes actually uses a lot more water than a dishwasher. However, this only remains true if you’re filling your dishwasher up all the way. If you consistently run quarter or half loads, you’ll still be wasting water.

Finally, upgrade your plumbing fixtures. Everything from your toilet, your shower, and your faucets could all be far more efficient if you’re not using WaterSense-approved products.

Lower Your Energy Bills

Outside of purchasing the most efficient models of all of your home’s appliances, including your HVAC system, the next best option is thoroughly caring for your existing systems. Regularly scheduled maintenance is crucial for keeping your HVAC system in perfect working order.

You can also pay more attention to the temperature settings you select for your home. If you crank your heat up to 80 degrees in the middle of winter, you can pretty much guarantee that your heating system will run 24/7 to keep your home that warm. As you can imagine, this will cause your energy bills to skyrocket. According to the United States Department of Energy, the ideal temperature setting for your home is 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Make the Necessary Upgrades

While renovating and upgrading your home can sometimes feel frivolous, there are also times where it is entirely necessary. This year when writing your new year’s resolutions, consider adding these essential upgrades t the list:

• Efficient plumbing fixtures

• Roof replacement

• Updated insulation

• Consider installing solar panels
